Bringing your beloved pet to see your Airman/Guardian graduate may sound like a great idea, but there a few things to consider.  Namely, is the stress on your pet worth it? Where will you stay and what happens when you are away at the events?

Service dogs that are trained to work or perform a task for persons with disabilities are allowed at the PRC (Pfingston Reception Center) and the parade grounds during graduation.  However, you should call the BMT Reception Center for clarification on what to bring and how to make sure your service animal is identified.  That number is (210) 671-3024 or (210) 671-3069.

Comfort and/or emotional support animals are not recognized by the American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) as a service animal, therefore, they are not allowed at graduation events.

Service and emotional support animals are allowed on base.  However, you should call the BMT Reception Center for clarification on if they are allowed at the ceremonies, what to bring and how to make sure your service animal is identified.  That number is (210) 671-3024 or (210) 671-3069.

If you decide to bring a pet on base (not service animals), here are some rules that need to be followed:

  • At no time can pets be left in a vehicle, even with the AC running.
  • Pets are not allowed at any of the events.
  • You are required to bring a valid rabies certificate with you, not just the pet’s tag.
  • You are responsible for cleaning up your pet’s waste no matter where you are on base.
  • There are no boarding kennels on base, although one on-base hotel is pet friendly.  You must call to see if a room is available and provide all required documents.  For reservation information call (210) 671-3622.
  • Some local hotels off-base will allow dogs but most say the dogs can’t be left in the room alone.  There are boarding facilities all around San Antonio as well.
  • Dogs are to be on a leash at all times with leash length not to exceed six feet.
  • Dogs that act aggressively or bark constantly will be asked to leave the base.

***There are breed restrictions on base! Some breeds such as Rottweilers, Pits, and Dobermans won’t be allowed on base nor mixes of these breeds.***
